Lieutenant Commander

Freespace 2 Medals

I loaded up Freespace 2 again and played through the dreaded 'Bearbaiting' mission.

So. Friggin. Hard.

It took me so many tries before I got all four forward beam cannons of the Satanna destroyed. I admitt a little bit of luck is involved. The angle needs to be juuuuust right to take them out with only 2 bombs. Screw the flak guns. It's impossible to destroy them in time. The AI wingmen are too dumb to help and I need them to be cannon fodder for the SF Basilisks anyways. I bombed the Beleth after that and jumped, but I didn't get credit for the kill. I just realized that I've never logged a kill for a Demon class cruiser. That kinda sucks.

And then I got promoted after blowing up the Satanna in the next mission!

Thief II

So yesterday, bored as always, I decided to start playing Thief II again. Oh man it was SOOOOOOO good. Thief is definitely the kind of game that you simply don't want to finish because it's SOOOOOOOO good and you simply don't want it to end. I played through two missions last night: the Mechanist Monastery and the First City Bank and Trust. Personally I like Thief II a bit better because there are no spooky Zombies lurking around in haunted graveyards or haunted Cathedral basements. Thief: the Dark Project freaked me out when you hear a Zombie sneaking up on you when you don't have any holy water handy. Thief II is a different experience; it's less scary and you get more time to explore and problem solve instead of worrying about "How the fuck am I gonna get into this area with 4 Zombies walking around?"

I always play on expert because you get more objectives. Besides it requires more skill when all you can use is the blackjack (though I'm want to play through it on hard again, just so I can use the broadheads). The Monastary wasn't too hard. I think I blackjacked everyone except the group of patrolling guards on the outside. It was definitely a fun mission though and it had a very ingenious setup. The Bank. OMG the Bank. I loved it. Roof top entry, blowing up bots, sneaking up on guards on loud hardwood tiles, setting up a moss patch and then doing a mid-air jump on to it and then blackjacking a guard... Oh man it was a super fun map! While exploring I found a floor window entry into the basement as well. I just kind of wish I had more fire arrows to blow up the bots. Well maybe not. I used the two I had on the security cams in the vault but the last two guards heard the explosion anyways. I tried to take them out but they are in a open area with a bot around them. It was fine though cuz once the vault door is closed they can't get in. Afterward I just speed potion-ed my way out after I got the recording haha. Fun shit! By the end of the night I had to stop because my pinky started to hurt from holding down the left Shift button for 'run'.

We need more games of this style: fully open, nonlinear, multiple paths to goal, and challenging (NOT frustrating). The game basically then becomes a huge problem and it's up to the player to figure out how to solve it. Now THAT is fun.

Sephiroth is dead.

Yup I beat FF7 yesterday evening. A couple years too late for anyone to care. It was pretty easy too. Set up barriers and haste / Big Guard, Bahamut Zero, or just with Cloud going 2x cut and Counter with his Ultima Weapon just raped Sephiroth's ass. He died so fast I couldn't believe it.

Went to Coq Center today. Holy crap I saw Chris Wang there... haven't seen him in like year.

Deal or no deal

Howie Mandel is such an idiot: "You now have 1 in 4 chance to win a million dollars!"

Bull.

You've always only had 1/26 chance to win 1,000,000. If you get a deal over 131,477.54 then I think you should take it. You've already beat the odds. The variance of those numbers are just insanely high. I seriously don't understand what's so exciting about this stupid show.

The problem with Linux...

is that it is so damn hard to get it recognize your hardware! Oh my if you thought plug-and-pray sucked, try getting anything to get recognized under Linux. It's almost friggin impossible.

*sigh... Back to win98se you are little computer...

Edit:
YES! A+!!!

Linux is so friggin confusing

So now that it's my break I've decide to give to Ubuntu linux a try on my old box. I upped the ram to 160mb and trashed the win98se installation that was on it and proceeded to install Ubuntu.

First try: Error 18 while loading GRUB. Googled it. Seems to be something with partitioning the drive. Reinstalled it and manually partitioned the boot partition to be 100mb. Ta da! It worked.

But now that's when the trouble starts. All these weird commands at the terminal... I'm trying to get the wi-fi to work and I have no clue what I'm doing with all of these weird commands and errors about can't find the linux source kernel and shit. Argh so I gave up. I'll probably end up putting 98se back on it.

One more grade is out. Just as I expected: A.

I'm IN!

Congratulations, the department of Statistics and Actuarial Science is pleased to inform you of the approval of your application into the Actuarial Science program.
We would like to remind you that unless you want to pursue more than one program, you should withdraw from the Faculty or Program that you are currently enrolled in. You should be allowed to proceed with on line registration into our ACMA courses in a few days by visiting http://go.sfu.ca/ You must satisfy the prerequisites of each course.

Note that the processing of the admissions may take longer than expected due to the end of term and the holiday season. Should this be the case, we ask that you do not email anyone (including staff, program advisor and instructors) to enquire about your status. There are enough places in all ACMA courses for all students approved. Special cases can be dealt with during the first week of classes in January.

Best of luck.

I'm about 4 maps away from beating Brood War if anyone cares. No new marks yet. Oh I started using this Blogger account because Wordpress is just ever so slow when you host your database with freesql.org. I'm still trying desperately to get into phpMyAdmin to pull my database off freeSQL and it's simply not working.

A and A+. Gimme one more A+ pls!!!

It shouldn’t have been an A. I was sooo going for an A+ in 285 with 2 AWESOME midterms; I just died on the final. Too much ACMA studying and not enough 285 studying. And please at least an A in 308. Man I would cry if I get any lower for this stupid course.

Friggin' ACMA

Another entry on ACMA.

The grades are already out. OMG can you believe it? The exam was Tuesday night and now the grades are out on Thurday?!?! LOL I guess like what the TA told me, “Well yeah we sorta stayed up the whole night marking, but a lot of the papers were pretty quick to mark.” *lotsa 0’s hint hint*.

B+.

My first ever B+. All that work for a B+. Jesus Christ. And it was barely a B+ too. Apparently my final wasn’t as great as I thought. I only scored 69.5 and winded up with a final mark of 72.3. B+ range was 72 to 79 inclusive. Oh man I felt pretty pwn-ed when Parker told me that. I now officially love assignments. Seriously.

But he wouldn’t tell me how many people got A’s though. Now Evan and I are scared that we won’t get admitted into the program because there might be 20 A’s for all we know (highly doubtful). Waiting sucks…

Oh where are all the smart ACMA people… lemme suck your brains!!!

ACMA Final

Well ACMA is over.

Overall the final actually surprised me quite a bit because most of it were recycled questions from assignments or old midterms. I was a little tense during the morning because I was redoing old assignment questions and I kept getting them WRONG–totally freaked me out for bit. But I managed to keep my cool, which is definitely essential for ANY exam. I answered almost everything, except the loan amortization one. The question seemed really screwed up. The sinking fund accumulates back to the 25,000 loan (I think?) but it’s supposed to be only 20% of the 20 equal payments… which would cause the loan balance to go down because you are paying more than the interest on the loan… which just fucks everything up. Haha I was swearing so much during the exam!!! I kept mouthing stuff like “Shit, fuck, oh shit, I’m stupid…” throughout the exams. LOL… ACMA is crazy because there are SOOOOO many places for you to make an easy mistake and get the wrong number.

I think I did pretty well.

Ok please let me did well…

Long time no see blog…

Final week. 2 down, 3 to go. Stat… I dunno. I feel that I did pretty crappy on it; my midterms were fine though. Hopefully it will be an A… was hoping for A+ though. Macm today was fine though.

Haha it’s pretty funny look at my ACMA comment from a while back. Its final tomorrow still scaries the shit out of me but I think I will get through it… hopefully at least pull an A-.
Oh man I can’t wait to finish exams and party. I want to beat Starcraft - Brood War LOL.
